Indian Head Massage

What is Indian Head Massage?
Head massage has always played an important part in Indian life. Originally part of the ancient Ayurvedic (science of life and longevity) healing system, dating back nearly 4,000 years, Indian Head Massage, or as it is known in India, Champissage, has been practised in India for over a thousand years. Head massage is performed in India as an integral part of treatment given by barbers and masseurs and these skills have been handed down from father to son, mother to daughter. Echoes of this Indian tradition reached the west long before the practice itself, in the form of 'shampoo' which comes from the Hindi word champi - being champi-ed meant having your head massaged! Indian Head Massage was brought to the west in the 1970's when Navendra Mehta came over to the UK from India and was disappointed to find that when going to the Barber for a haircut there was no massage included!
Indian Head Massage incorporates the head, neck, shoulders and face.

How does it work?
Indian Head Massage works on both a physical and psychological level, the techniques used represent a de-stressing program for the whole body. By massaging specific points on the head, face, shoulders and back, energies will become re-balanced and a general feeling of relaxation will be achieved. Indian Head Massage improves blood flow to the head and neck, which increases the distribution of nutrients to encourage healing throughout the body. It stimulates the flow of oxygen to the brain thus alleviating tiredness and boosting energy levels. Low immunity and illness are a result of the accumulation of toxins within the body. Indian Head Massage encourages the release of these toxins by stimulating the flow of oxygen around the body, resulting in a stronger immune system and aiding good health. Each pressure point on the head is linked to different organs and functions throughout the body. The facial element of the massage is especially good for reducing signs of ageing as it relaxes tense facial muscles which can result in lines and wrinkles.
Indian Head Massage is renowned for easing headaches and stress. In addition, the conditions it can help are many. It helps maintain a healthyscalp, aids hair growth, aids localised blood and lymphatic circulation, relieves eye strain, boosts the immune system, relieves muscle tension, and helps to ease joint mobility.
