The Tarot

Tarot cards were first made in the 15th century as an Italian card game It wasn't until 300 years later that they began to be used used for the purposes of 'fortune telling'.

In the late 20th century Tarot cards became increasingly popular as a tool for guidance and direction used regularly by mystics and psychics. There were also people who were simply interested in using the deck for self-exploration without any spiritual or mystical motivation. It was again redefined, largely in the terms of Jungian psychology, but with borrowings from the earlier occultists and from Waite. This development was greatly facilitated by Waite's mystical Tarot deck, which served as a model for hundreds of derivative decks. The new element, characteristic of contemporary Tarot, was the belief that a combination of intuition and free association would reveal universal archetypes from the unconscious mind.

The tarot deck is comprised of 78 cards: 22 major arcana and 56 minor arcana. The 22 major arcana cards depict the journey through one's life, which originates with the Fool card and ends with a card called The World. Although mystics have called this the road through life, some clergy have omplied that the cards were the road to hell and the devil. The Devil is a card in the major arcane, but it depicts enslavement, addiction and misdirection rather than Satan. Another widely misunderstood card is the famous Death card, which does not mean death of the physical body, but merely change and transformation of some kind. The fool card is the predecessor of the Joker cards we discard before shuffling most decks for a game.

There are as many diferent types of readings as there are cards. Most popular is the three card reading which incorporates past, present and future, the one card reading which offers guidance in answer to a specific question or subject matter and the celtic cross which involves seven cards.

The minor arcana is the part of the deck that most closely resembles our playing cards of today. The minor arcane contains four suites, which correspond to any game deck you may have around the house. The suits are Wands (Clubs) Cups (Hearts) Pentacles (Diamonds) and Swords (Spades). Also present are the Queen, King and Knight (or Jack) of each suit, plus the addition of Pages, which resemble young men, or women of court, which are not represented in the modern playing deck.

I do not predict further ahead than 6 months as this cannot in all honesty be done with complete accuracy due to the butterfly effect – changes can occur dependant on actions and behaviours within said time span. For example a predicted outcome too far ahead would be subject to change if the recipient of the reading changes something in their life path prior to the event.
